CHAPTER 10

GWENDOLYN

"You don't happen to have a boat lying around?" I asked, peering out at the pirate ship in the distance, my voice light with a hint of mirth.

He chuckled, and I liked that he thought I was funny. "Now why would I need that when I have such a better option for transportation."

His words seemed to hold a hidden meaning, and I cocked my head, trying to ignore how stunning he was standing there with the stars as a background.

"I'm not swimming, if that’s what you’re suggesting. There are definitely sharks out there.”

“Scared of sharks, are you?” He grinned. “Did you forget you were immortal?”

I shivered, just thinking of something waiting in the dark water. “Sharks are evil. They’d find a way to kill me. I know it.”

He laughed again, but this time he did it with his whole body, throwing back his head in delight. He was relaxing, the tension of our earlier conversation leaking out of him.

There was a freedom about him in that moment, I didn’t know how to explain it. It wasn’t like he was usually reserved. He never failed to take whatever he wanted, consequences be damned. But right then, he just seemed lighter.

"Little omega, I'm not going to make you swim with the sharks tonight. Although skinny dipping is definitely on my list of favorite activities," he taunted with a charming wink that had butterflies swooping around my stomach. “We’re going to fly there.”

My mouth dropped. “Fly?” I asked, sure I hadn't heard him right.

He looked pleased with the shock written across my face. Before I could say anything else, I realized he'd risen in the air. Glancing down, I saw his feet were at least two feet in the air. And it wasn't like he sprouted wings or anything like that. He was just hovering there, effortlessly, it seemed.

He reached out a hand towards me. “Come take a ride, Darling,” he murmured.

One thing about me, I was incredibly afraid of heights. Even just standing on this cliff was giving me heart palpitations. So the idea of willingly soaring through the air…

Even as fear shot around my chest, my mind was racing with the idea of floating through the stars. As a little girl, before everything had gone so off-track, I used to lay in the meadow by our house and stare up at the clouds as they passed by. I’d had no idea that you couldn’t walk on clouds, and I’d imagined all the grand adventures I’d go on if only I could get up there.

“Come on," he cajoled, extending his arm out even further. "Don't you trust me?"

"No, of course not,” I responded back quickly, and he grinned before lunging forward and grabbing my hand tightly in his.

And then suddenly, he was pulling me off the ground. I couldn't hold in my terrified scream as I got farther and farther away from the safety of the dirt. "Don't let go," I begged, holding onto his one hand with both of mine before lunging forward and wrapping my arms around his neck as he soared up into the sky.
